Royal girls top Wahluke in soccer

ROYAL CITY - It was scheduled as a friendly match, but Royal wasn't overly kind to Wahluke in a high school girls soccer home opener last week, winning 4-0.

"It was a great way to start off the season at home and, even though it was a friendly, it is always good to beat Wahluke," coach Jens Jensen said.

The Knights were led by player of the game Marisol Lozano. She had a hand - foot, that is - in all four goals. She scored the first two and assisted on the third and fourth.

Lozano started her assault by scoring off a free kick in the 22nd minute. She got her second goal by converting a penalty kick six minutes later.

Lozano's first assist was a corner kick that Maria Garcia headed into the netting 11 minutes into the second half. Then she sent a free kick to the far post that Flor Araujo converted with five minutes to go.

"It was our first match with everyone eligible and, for the most part, healthy," Jensen said. "The girls did well and scored from four set pieces."

Defensively, the Knights were tough all over the field. The Warriors took three shots and only one on goal. Goal keeper Stefhany Guadarrama was called on for only one save.

The Knights had five corner kicks to one for Wahluke.
