MATTAWA - It took a while for the offense to awaken, but the defense was good all night as Wahluke (1-1) dispatched White Swan, 25-6, in a non-league high school football contest here Saturday.

"Ricky Silverio and Jaime Jimenez both played a great game defensively at the linebacker position," coach Brycen Bye said. "Each played a major role in a team effort of holding White Swan to under 50 yards on the ground."

The season will continue at home this Friday when the Mabton Vikings (0-2) come to town for another non-leaguer. The Vikings were vanquished, 52-7, by Granger on Friday.

"They like to run the ball," Bye said. "They keep it packed in. They don't throw the ball much."

The Warriors started Saturday night with a defensive stop that resulted in two points. A Cougar ball carrier was forced into the end zone and tackled for a safety after a Wahluke punt gave White Swan the ball inside the 10-yard line.

Moments later, Francisco Cuevas returned a White Swan kickoff to the end zone for an 8-0 Warrior lead after one quarter. The lead grew to 11-0 at the half on a 20-yard field goal by Oscar Jimenez.

"Our defensive line of Alberto Cruz, Noe Lopez, Jared Sabin, Jonah Gallacci, Dario Prudente and Jose Gallardo played very well both rushing the passer and defending the run," Bye said.

White Swan mounted a little offense in the third period to close to 11-6, but then Quarterback Jared Sabin took control of his offense and turned it loose for two fourth-quarter scores. Sabin himself scored on runs of 15 and three runs.

Sabin finished the night with six completions in 12 pass attempts with one interception. He added 17 yards rushing.

Cuevas led the rushing with 61 runs on 11 carries. He caught three passes for 60 yards.

Ricardo Silverio ran three times for 52 yards. Jonathan Abarca carried for times for 22 yards.

Abarca caught one pass for 10 yards, Rafael Mendoza corralled one for 40 yards, and Jordan Zirker had one for two yards.
