MATTAWA - Participation at Desert Aire's Hot Desert Nights was profitable for the Wahluke High School 21st Century Program's Auto Detailing Club.

The six Wahluke students who worked at the club function combined their efforts to raise $315 for the club. The money will go toward the purchase of a new buffer.

"We'd like to say thank you to the Lions Club for allowing us the opportunity to be a part of their event," 21st Century Program Site Director Jay Scott. "The students had fun, and the experience has given them the desire to offer more services to the community."

Auto Detailing Club members raised the funds by detailing 12 cars before the drag races at the Desert Aire airport. They had help from the business community.

O'Reilly's Auto Parts provided all of the materials used for washing and waxing. Eckenberg Farms provided work space in a hangar at the airport.

The Auto Detailing Club is one of 23 after-school programs offered by the 21st Century Program this year. The club operated all school year and into the summer. Members learned how to detail vehicles professionally from John Ellsworth, an instructor hired by the program.

"Mr. Ellsworth has led several 21st Century Programs the past three years, and he's been a valuable member of the 21st Century Program team," Scott said.

Scott noted the students prepared all year for Hot Desert Nights. It was their goal, and they committed and dedicated themselves to it.

"When I heard the positive feedback from customers and saw the cars the students completed, I couldn't have been prouder," Scott said.

According to Scott, the Auto Detailing Club will continue to offer its services during the school year. The cost will be $35 for a small car, $45 for a medium-sized car and $55 of a large car (mini van).
