Fire destroys structure near Moses Lake

| October 17, 2011 6:15 AM

MOSES LAKE - Grant County Fire District 5 personnel responded to a Thursday morning structure fire on Road N.4 northeast of Moses Lake.

When crews arrived at around 6:45 a,m, flames had totally engulfed the two-story building, which Fire Chief Scott Clendenin described as an outbuilding measuring about 30 feet by 60 feet used to house chickens in the wintertime.

The blaze was caused when an electrical outlet was overloaded with extension cords in the upper story of the building, which was being used as a sleeping quarters, according to Clendenin.

"Nobody was in there when the fire started," he said. "It had apparently been smoldering for awhile."

Crews managed to knock down the blaze before it spread to two adjacent outbuildings, Clendenin said.

Nineteen Fire District 5 firefighters responded to the fire with three engines and five tenders.
