ROBBED AGAIN
WENATCHEE, Wash. - Robert Nichols (Dallas, Texas) notched his second straight shutout, Trace Redmond (McKinney, Texas) and Chris Kerr (Penticton, British Columbia) scored second-period breakaway goals and the Wenatchee Wild defeated the Odessa Jackalopes 2-0 Friday at the Town Toyota Center.
A 19-year-old, Nichols has been nearly flawless in the early portion of his first season with the Wild. He touts a 4-0 record with three shutouts and has stopped all but one of the 116 shots he has faced.
The Wild got a break 20 seconds into the second frame when Redmond jumped on a loose puck in the neutral zone that developed into a breakaway. Redmond buried his shot high for his first goal of the season, which gave his team a 1-0 lead and would eventually count as the game-winner.
Kerr increased Wenatchee's lead to 2-0 with 7:58 remaining in the second period on another one-on-one opportunity. Like Redmond, Kerr scored his first marker of the 2011-12 campaign on a top-shelf shot.
Connor Hellebuyck made 21 saves on 23 shots for the Jackalopes. Nichols denied all 31 shots he faced. Odessa was 0-for-3 on the man-advantage while Wenatchee was 0-for-2.
Wenatchee improved to 4-3 with the win. The second game of the Wild's Pink at the Rink weekend series is Saturday. Faceoff is at 7:05 p.m.
