Warden girls soccer beats Brewster

BREWSTER - The Warden Cougars traveled to Brewster Saturday to start their second half of league play and came away with a convincing 3-0 over the Bears.

The team was 9-0 overall, and 5-0 in league, and had to play errorless soccer if they intended to keep their perfect record in tact.

"The girls knew this would be a big game on the road," coach Don Edson said. "We won the first meeting with them in a shoot out, so we expected to have a battle on our hands.Ê Brewster is always a tough game. They are a well coached, tough, aggressive team."

Warden opened the scoring in the 12th minute of the match, when a ball cleared out of the Brewster defense was controlled by Tawnie Gonsalez and sent back to forward to Brylee Whitney, who beat the goalie with a well placed shot for a 1-0 lead.

After the initial goal, both teams settled in and the fuss was on.

"It was hard for either team to gain any advantage during the rest of the first half," Edson said. "The second half started the same way until we were able to seize an opportunity when a Brewster foul led to an indirect kick."

After a first touch by Alexys Jolley, Taylor Edson was able to find the net from 35-yards out with a hard shot to the far corner of the goal to put Warden up 2-0. The final score of the match came in the 73rd minute off of a corner kick played to the front post by Edson to Whitney, who beat the defense to one touch the ball out of the air into the box.

Edson said it was good the get a win on the road, and that he was he was proud of the way the teamed performed.

"Every player who stepped on the field today put forth fantastic effort," he said. "The defensive back four of Rebeka Richins, Ana Suarez, Tawnie (Gonsalez), and Rachel Crow, along with goalie Deianeira Caudle deserve a lot of credit to the success of this season. In 10 games so far, the team has allowed only eight goals and those girls in the back are a big reason why."

The Cougars travel to Othello Tuesday for a non-league match against the Huskies junior varsity squad.
