| November 30, 2011 5:00 AM

Maximiliano (Nito) Vela, Jr. went to be with the Lord on November 20, 2011, in Woodinville, Washington.

Max was born July 24, 1929, in Repueblo de Oriente, Los Ramones, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, to Maximiliano Vela, Sr. and Gregoria Garza. He was the oldest of four sons, including Florentino, Eleno and Arturo Vela. He is survived by Hijinia Campos de Vela, his devoted, Christian wife of 62 years. Max and Hijinia had eight children: Max Vela, III, Delia Vela Gode, Rigo Vela, Ariel Vela, Quina Vela, Odulia Vela Anthony, Adrian Vela and Laurita Vela. Their children blessed them with six sons and daughters-in-law, 17 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.

Max and Hijinia resided in Texas, California, and finally settled in Othello, Washington in the 1960's. Max was one of the first Mexican immigrants to arrive in Othello and establish a permanent life in his beloved community. It was in Othello where Max and Hijinia became proud U.S citizens, raised their children and made sure they achieved the greater goal of earning college educations and becoming successful career professionals. Max was proud of his children's accomplishments and achievements, and joyfully shared this with his friends. Max worked as a contractor, truck driver, and business owner. He loved barbecuing for his family and friends, singing romantic songs to his wife, spoiling his grandchildren, and being connected with his community. He had a smile for everyone and was greatly respected by his friends. The strong and positive leadership that he provided greatly influenced his family to have fervent work ethics and commitment to strive for excellence and success.

Max suffered a devastating stroke in 1996, but continued a dignified and valiant fight until the end, when he succumbed to a heart attack at Evergreen Medical Center in Kirkland, Washington.

Visitation were held Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at Stevens Funeral Chapel in Othello, Washington.  Funeral service were held on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at Bethel Assembly of God Church in Othello, Washington.
