People tell me that this is a conservative place. People say that they want less government interference and more individual freedom. But I doubt this. I think that people here secretly love government interference.

Consider the issue of outdoor cats. Consider the front-page article entitled “Citizen asks Moses Lake to deal with outdoor cats” from Thursday, November 17, 2011. When a citizen sees too many cats, what do they do? The citizen asks the government to do something about it. The citizen asks the government to restrict the freedom of all cat owners. The citizen wants a rule that all cats either stay indoors or be on a leash despite the obvious difficulties that this may place on cat owners. (FYI: a better rule would be to require cat owners to spay or neuter their pets.)

OK, conservatives... I’m calling your bluff. Show me that you really want less government interference and more individual freedom. Write to the city council and tell them that you are against onerous rules placed on cat owners. Or else stop claiming to be conservatives and admit that you’ve really been in-the-closet government-regulation-loving liberals all this time.

Lastly, to the cat owners in Moses Lake: please have your pets spayed or neutered. There really are too many cats here and they catch too many birds. The best solution is to restrict their reproduction. There are also too many feral cats here. Do everyone a favor: rent an animal trap from the animal shelter, catch a feral cat, and pay to have it either fixed or put down.
