MOSES LAKE - A Moses Lake High School student is honoring her late grandmother and best friend's mom by organizing the town's first Turkey Trot on Nov. 19.

The run's proceeds go to the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation, said event organizer Kelsie Grant, 18. Her grandmother and her best friend's mom died of cancer.

"I've always like doing fun runs and whatnot," Grant said. "I also wanted to do some sort of fundraiser for cancer because I've been affected by cancer with my grandma and my best friend's mom. I wanted to do something to help the local community."

Grant is putting the run together to meet the requirements of her senior project. Her other work on the project entails designing the run's T-shirt, creating registration forms and fliers, organizing participants and their numbers and coordinating 15-20 volunteers.

Her group of volunteers is comprised of friends, family and her fellow Key Club members.

She obtained about 15 sponsors for the event.

She started the project in June and mentioned the Moses Lake Clinic as a major sponsor.

She's received about $2,000 in sponsorships so far.

Participants can register the day of the event, but aren't guaranteed a T-shirt.

Advance registration by Thursday is encouraged.

To register, obtain a form at the Moses Lake Parks and Recreation office at 411 Balsam St., Moses Lake, or download a form at mlrec.com. The form can be brought to the parks and recreation office or mailed there.

The event is held at 9 a.m., Nov. 19, at Blue Heron Park, at 111 Westshore Dr., Moses Lake. The cost is $15 per person.

The run begins and ends at Blue Heron Park.

Medals are presented to first, second and third place winners of each division.

Divisions are males and females, ages six and younger, seven-10, 11-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and older.
