Conrad Leroy Stephens
Conrad went to his eternal home on the morning of November 5, 2011. He died peacefully at home after having a great week with his children. Conrad was born on March 5, 1921 at Elizabeth, Arkansas to Henry and Violet Stephens. He attended schools in Elizabeth, served in the CC camps in southern Arkansas for 2 years, where he continued his education. He left the CC camps to work with his Dad and brothers in sawmills in Elizabeth. He married his sweetheart of 3 months, Nora Mae McCormack of Melbourne, Arkansas, on January 25, 1941. He joined the Navy during World War II in 1945. He was medically discharged that same year due to a heart murmer which would follow him allthe rest of his life. Their first child was born in Arkansas. Work brought them to Washington, then to California where their second son was born, then back to Washington where their daughter was born. Conrad worked in the Okanogan Valley for a number of years in the fruit and lumber businesses. He operated service stations in Spokane and Othello and then worked as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement. He spent his life serving the Lord and was currently an active member of the Church of Christ in Ephrata, WA. In his earlier years he enjoyed working with youth groups, and has served as an Elder and Deacon in the Church of Christ in Spokane and Othello. His passion was his family and felt blessed with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to whom he cheerfully referred to himself as "Grandpa the Great".
He is survived by this loving wife of 70 years, his "four" children: Lavaughn and Terry Stephens of Spokane, Darrel Stephens of Pasco, and Louise Stephens of Wenatchee, grandchildren, Kimberly Meyer,-San Diego, Craig & Erin Stephens, Spokane, and Jennifer & Jon Kenyon, Paris, France, 8 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers, Travis of Kansas and Bernard of Arkansas, 1 sister WillaMae of Missouri and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving him are 2 brother-in-laws and 1 sister-in-law which were also a major part of his family.
A special thanks to Dr. Kirkham, nurse Phyllis and Hospice of Grant County. Also a special thanks to the Ephrata Church of Christ for their constant support and encouragement and especially their minister, Doug Watts for his unceasing ministering to Conrad and Nora Mae and the family.
Following a private burial, there will be a Memorial Service at Nicole Funeral Chapel, 157 C Street NW, Ephrata, WA 98823 at 1 PM Wednesday, November 9, 2011. Doug Watts will be officiating.
