Royal tops Wahluke in VB finale
ROYAL CITY - It was a tough year in volleyball for Royal High School, but the Knights finished in style, knocking off arch-rival Wahluke, 25-22, 25-20, 25-19, in three well-played games.
"It was satisfying to get a win in our final match of the year against our cross country rivals," coach Paul Olsufka. It was disappointing to miss out on districts, but ending with a win made the ladies feel better."
Wahluke coach Rudi Christian's girls were, of course, not excited at the end. They, too, had a tough year. But Christian noted they put up a fight in each of the three games.
"The team played great together and had great teamwork," she said. "There were several moments of greatness, but we were never able to get the momentum going to push to 25 points."
The Warrior girls were led by the 12 digs and five blocks of Marleny Garcia. Maripaz Olivarez had 19 digs. Wendy Garcia had six kills, and Tanya Mendez had six digs.
The Knights were led by the Christensen girls. Lindsey had 10 kills, four digs and served 11-13 with two aces. Moriah had nine kills, 10 dig, one block and 11-11 serving with two aces.
Tonya Iverson had six kills and two blocks. Cambree Harris had one ace, eight digs and three kills. Tahlia Ledezma served 17-17 with two aces and had 21 assists. Madison Stakkeland had three aces.
