Quincy meeting includes crime commission
QUINCY - Quincy officials hope to get city residents involved in the Public Safety Commission.
The city is holding a second town hall meeting to discuss the commission, the block watch program, recreation and other crime prevention items on Nov. 17. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Quincy Community Center, located at 115 F Street SW.
The commission was formed by Mayor Jim Hemberry following concerns brought by a business owner. It includes representatives from the city, fire district, the hospital district, school district, business owners and religious leaders.
As part of the plan, Hemberry wanted 10 representatives from the community to coordinate the neighborhood watch programs. Each of the representatives would be tasked with coordinating block watch programs within a neighborhood of the city.
"They are more or less the go-between for the Public Safety Commission and the block watch captains," Hemberry said.
The city received several pages of potential volunteers after the last town hall meeting in May, but Hemberry said the city never heard back from the people who offered to help.
"We haven't reached out and talked to people," he said. "What we need to do is get the information out about what we need. What a block watch captain does and exactly what (the neighborhood coordinator) does."
Along with the presentation about the public safety commission, Recreation Director Russ Harrington is scheduled to present plans about the city's recreation program, Hemberry said. Police Chief Richard Ackerman is speaking as well.
The meeting will be available in English and Spanish.
