Soap Lake box derby returns Saturday

SOAP LAKE - The second Soap Lake Box Derby start rolling Saturday on Main Avenue in Soap Lake.
The derby started last year as a project by Soap Lake Boy Scout Troop 44 as their community involvement project, said Jim Dorris, who helped the scouts organize the event.
He said the goal is to make it an annual event.
While the derby is a Boy Scout project, it is open to the public. Anyone can participate and watch.
It costs $15 to participate in the race.
There is no fee for spectators.
The race features four trophy divisions: stocks, super stock, masters and oil can.
Participants will race on a 900-foot downhill track.
"I know that we've got more applications this year than we had last year, so it's going to be a little bit bigger," said Dorris.
A carnival takes place at the end of the track, featuring real race cars, said Dorris.
Food and gift vendors will be present, too.
"Come and enjoy," said Dorris. "If nothing else, come and watch the kids and cheer them on."
Breakfast is served from 6-10 a.m.
The pits open at 7 a.m.
Racing starts at 9 a.m.
