Cellarbration! raises $86,000

| May 25, 2011 6:00 AM

MOSES LAKE - Big Bend Community College Foundation's weekend Cellarbration! event raised about $86,000 in scholarship funds for 65 students.

The students assisted by the funds are 25 high school graduates in 2011, 20 returning students and 20 professional/technical students, said Doug Sly, the foundation's executive director, on Monday.

"I am pleased with the results," he stated. "These are difficult economic times, and bidders were generous."

Last year's event brought in about $92,000, he said.

He is still happy with Saturday's results.

"You don't know what to expect in this type of economy," Sly commented. "We knew it was going to be tough. I think we did well. Times are really tough. We feel fortunate to be where we're at."

Guests also donated $8,900 in about five minutes during a special bid for the foundation's emergency scholarship fund.
