SPOKANE - Sophomore Sadie Nielsen has qualified for the Class 4A state track finals as the lone Moses Lake Chief to end her season on the campaign's final weekend.

Nielsen captured first place at the GSL/Big 9 Regionals at Spokane Community College this weekend with a throw of 125-09 to win the event by three inches.

Nielsen and the Chiefs girls finished in 10th place while the boys ended up in 13th place out of 13 schools.

"She is really closing in on our school record of 127-04," Moses Lake girls coach Nicki Weiland said. "She went in as the fourth placed thrower and ended up taking first. We are really proud of Sadie and her accomplishment."

The top three athletes in each event advanced to the state finals which will be held at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma from Thursday through Saturday. Nielsen will throw on Thursday.

Nielsen also finished sixth in the shot put.

In addition for the girls team, the 4x100-meter relay team of Kayla Grigg, Caylah Lunning, Keiley Garcia and Magie Munoz, which broke a school record at the district meet the previous week, finished in seventh place (51.05) and Selina Koon took eighth in the high jump (4-10).

Also recording a top ten finish was Munoz who ended up in ninth place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2.28.6.

Other girls who performed at the meet were London Cleverly (200-meter run), Taylor Ballard (shot put) and Kimberly Bakker (long and triple jump).

On the boys' side, Cameron Law took fifth place in the pole vault with a jump of 13-06 and Justyn Simmons finished in fifth place as well in the long jump with a leap of 20-07.25.

"That was Justyn's best jump of the year," MLHS boys coach Kevin Whittall said. "He may be the one to watch over the next two years. Cameron's result was a personal record and we have two more years of him also. Cameron was fun to watch fly in the air."

Brandon Bradley took ninth in the shot put and 13th in the discus and Cesar Sanabia ended up in 10th place in the 300-meter hurdles.
