Peterson wins four events, Tonnemaker 2 at sub-district
BENTON CITY -Wahluke sophomore Katelyn Peterson and Royal senior Ethan Tonnemaker had stellar days to lead their teams at the South Central A Conference East sub-district track meet here last Thursday.
Together, Royal and Wahluke scored 45 advancements to the South Central A Conference district meet at Goldendale this Friday. Field events will get under way at 4 p.m. Running events will start at 4:30.
Qualifying for district were the top four in laned events (100, 200, 400, hurdles) at sub-district and the top eight in all other events.
"Twenty of our 23 athletes made it to district," coach Scott Sandberg said.
Sandberg was especially elated with the performance of freshman Cynthia Cid. She finished second in the 800 with a time of 2:45 and ran on three placing relays.
Cid's 800 time was not as fast as any of the top four at the West sub-district, but she was close enough to say she has a shot to advance to state.
One runner Sandberg is sure of is Tonnemaker. He won the 1600 and 3200 going away, and the top runner from the West would not have finished second in the East in either race.
Tonnemaker won the 1600 with a time of 4:40.08. Second was Adrian Castellanos of Kiona-Benton in 4:46.38.
Tonnemaker's time in the 3200 was 10:28.93. Kyle Brightman of Ki-Be finished second in 10:42.05.
The big story for Wahluke was Peterson, who won four events. She topped the field in the 200, 400, long jump and triple jump. She is a good bet to make it state in at least one event and probably all four. Four girls will qualify in each event.
"I'm not sure if anybody from Mattawa has done that before as a sophomore," coach Brock Anderson said.
Peterson comes from track and field stock. Her older sister, Lexie, competed at state in the triple jump, high jump and high and low hurdles.
Peterson's time of 28.26 in the 200 was better than third place in the West and 1/10 of a second off second place. Her 1:04.19 was the fastest time, East or West.
Peterson's East-winning mark of 16-1 in the long jump was No. 1 for the entire district. Her effort of 34-4 in the East Triple jump was better than second in the West.
Anderson is about 5-8 and slender with springs in her legs, according to coach Brock Anderson. She is the best female athlete he's ever coached.
