Columbia Basin Herald welcomes new reporter

MOSES LAKE - The Columbia Basin Herald's newest reporter is Steven Wyble, an Eastern Washington University journalism graduate.

Wyble, 25, recently started reporting on the Herald's health and education/arts and entertainment beat.

Before joining the staff, Wyble was writing as a part-time reporter for a newspaper in Western Washington.

He's enjoyed learning about the area and meeting new people, he said Monday.

He's also liked having the opportunity to learn more about his subjects by writing about them. It helped him learn more about the Columbia Basin.

"Just from covering schools so far, it's interesting to see the diversity in all the different public schools," he commented. "It's kind of cool."

His hobbies include writing fiction and reading. He owns "hundreds of books," he said.

"I'm learning guitar," he said. "Otherwise, I like to explore all sorts of things and constantly be learning new things."

He also enjoys kayaking.

During his senior year in high school, he built a kayak with a group called "On Paddles Wings," a youth organization that helps high school students construct kayaks from kits.

The project culminates in a trip to the San Juan Islands. He was part of the pilot program. 

Wyble is from Grapeview, a town he describes as "small and rural," located between Olympia and Bremerton.
