Chiefs girls golf take 4th in Yakima POD play
YAKIMA- It's always a good thing to head into the postseason playing one's best in any sport.
On Tuesday at Yakima Elks, the Moses Lake Chiefs girls golf team wrapped up Columbia Basin Big Nine POD play with one of its stronger performances to date, thanks to a stellar performance by Vannessa Goodwin.
Led by Goodwin's round of 89, good enough for third overall, the Chiefs shot a team score, 426, to end up fourth, six strokes behind third-place Wenatchee. Richland won the day with a 341 score.
"It was a good day for the Chiefs," Moses Lake head coach Lonny Brown said. "There are 33 girls that qualified for districts and we had five. So that is very good. Vannessa and Jacy Jones both ended up Second Team All-League finishing ninth and 11th overall for the season. I can't remember when a girl made all league from Moses Lake and I have been doing this 10 or 11 years and this is first I have seen."
Jones shot a 107 as did Kristi Brown to finish tied for 15th at the POD and Terrin Utter closed the day with a personal best score of 123.
In the POD standings, Moses Lake remains in fifth place with 20 points through the six events, trailing fourth-place Walla Walla by four points.
The District Tournament is Monday in Wenatchee and the top eight golfers qualify for the state tournament.
"Vannessa and Jacy are going be right there in the running," coach Brown said.
Emily Dennis and Katrina Ulnick will join Goodwin, Jones, and Kristi Brown at the district meet.
