MOSES LAKE - Help Moses Lake make a great first impression on visitors by volunteering for the Citywide Clean Up on Saturday.

Volunteers can meet at 8 a.m. at the aquatic center parking lot, located at 321 S. Balsam St., to pick up their garbage bags and vests, said Bev Shuford, Vision 2020's city beautification chair.

Volunteers receive their work assignments and pick up garbage until 11 a.m.

The Moses Lake restaurant Michael's on the Lake provides a lunch of hot dogs, hamburgers, salads and pop.

The event is needed, she said.

Shuford said the roads are full of garbage, apparently because of the high winds.

"Some years garbage is heavier than others," she said. "I think wind has played a role in picking things up and throwing things around."

The clean up route includes the main roads of Division, Pioneer, Broadway and portions of state Route 17, as well as the fields by the movie theater.

"We just try to get to areas that are accessible," she explained.

Usually between 200 to 250 people volunteer for the event.

This year, the congregations from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are sending volunteers, as well as Eka Chemicals, Girl Scouts, Brownies and Columbia Basin Job Corps.

Job Corps plays a big role in both the Citywide Clean Up and the Moses Lake Business Association's (MLBA) downtown street clean up, which is also held Saturday.

This year, Shuford expects between 300 to 350 volunteers to show up.

A traveling trophy is awarded for the event, which Job Corps won last year for bringing the most people.

To help wash sidewalks, go to the Moses Lake Kentucky Fried Chicken, at 411 E. Third Ave., at 5:30 a.m.
