Community support sought for float

ROYAL CITY - The festival parade season is fast approaching, and financial support and volunteers are needed for the Royal City community float.

Kyla Christensen is the mother of Royal City Distinguished Young Woman Moriah Christensen. That gives her the added honor of fund-raiser for the float her daughter and the court will ride.

Christensen has sent letters out to businesses asking for assistance. As in the past, a business can have a sign on the float trailer for $200 the first year and $100 per year for subsequent years.

Christensen is also asking the community in general to contribute to the cause. It takes a good sum of money to build the float and transport it.

"Dennis and Trula Gull are the ones in charge of building the float and taking it to parades and driving it around the parades," Christensen said.

The Gulls could use a few extra hands, Christensen said. The float needs to be ready for the Lilac Festival in Spokane in mid-May.

Christensen added that the DYW board needs new members. There only two currently. She had to leave it, by rule, for the year her daughter is the DYW.

The float participates in about 10 parades per year, traveling about 1,400 miles during spring, summer and fall. Christensen estimates it costs about $100 per event in gas to move the float. Other distant commitments are to Cashmere, Deer Park and Leavenworth.

"The gas for the float is estimated at around $1,000," Christensen said.

Building and decorating the float, and the outfits for the court total about $3,500, Christensen added. It costs about $70 to make buttons with the likenesses of the girls that the court gives to other Junior Miss courts. And there are insurance costs.

"During Summerfest we invite all the Junior Miss courts to be in our parade, to have a luncheon so they can get to know each other," Christensen said.

According to Christensen, volunteers would be welcome as chaperones and fund-raisers.
