Jacks win Jewett Invite; Chiefs girls take fourth
ELLENSBURG - The Quincy Jacks boys rolled to a title at Saturday's Keith Jewett Invitational in Ellensburg while the Moses Lake girls took fourth place, the Chiefs boys ended up tied for 12th place, and the Lady Jacks ended up in 15th place.
Othello's teams each took ninth at the meet.
Quincy's boys scored 92 points to lead the way while Othello ended up with 25 and the Moses Lake team had 17.5 points.
Leading the Jacks' attack were Armando Tafoya who won both the shot put (45-03.5) and discus (137-00) and Luke Grigg who captured top honors in the pole vault (13-00).
Taking second place medals were Adrian Diaz (3,200-meter run, 10:24.77), Grigg (110-meter hurdles, 15.44), and Ian Huxtable (high jump, 6-00, and long jump, 20-08.50).
Also taking thirds was Grigg in the 300-meter hurdles (42.33).
Brandon Bradley of Moses Lake was the clear top finisher for the Chiefs as he took second place in the shot put with a throw off 44-09.75 while the team ended up with seven, top ten finishes.
The Huskies of Othello were sparked by Antonio Estrada's first place finish in the 800-meter run (2:03.38) and three fourth-place finishes in various events.
Moses Lake's girls were witness to a coming out party by freshman Caylah Lunning.
Lunning took two first places in the long jump (16-03.50) and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Magie Munoz, Keiley Garcia, Kayla Grigg and herself. She also had a second-place in the 100-meter run (13.02).
What made Lunning's long jump win more remarkable was that it was only the youngster's third go in the event after being placed their last week, according to Chiefs girls head coach Nicki Weiland.
Grigg took third in the triple jump (32-02.75) while Munoz captured a third place as well in the 400-meter run (1:03.86).
Lady Huskies that recorded points included Christine Kirkwood in the javelin as she won with a strong throw of 139-10 and in the discus where she took third place with a distance of 117-10.
Hannah Hayduk took second in the pole vault (9-00) to aid the Othello cause.
In the 3,200-meter run, Quincy's Sarah Martinez took third place with a time of 13:15.30.
