MOSES LAKE - Just what the soccer doctor ordered.

After consecutive Big 9 losses to start the campaign, the Moses Lake Chiefs picked up the right prescription for their ills last night at Lions Field:

A win.

A 22nd-minute goal by Jonny Cortez was enough for the Chiefs (2-3-1, 1-2) to get on the winning side of the league ledger as they held off visiting Eisenhower 1-0.

Cortez scored after his brother Adolfo slotted a through ball to his feet for a one-time strike past the Eisenhower goalkeeper from approximately 18 yards out.

Moses Lake outshot Eisenhower 9-8 and got six saves from Chiefs keeper Luis Villa.

"The younger players were challenged to step-up and commit to playing 'Chief Soccer'," Moses Lake head coach Bill Bertram said. "That means winning 50/50 balls, contesting every Ike possession, and passing with purpose. "

Bertram said freshmen Larry Banegas and Tyler Courtright made solid impressions on a rainy night to help boost the team's chances.

Junior Derrick Gonzales also "showed dominant form in the midfield and led with physical play," according to Bertram.

"We're starting to get healthy and maybe we're turning the corner," Bertram added.

PULLMAN - A Ivan Lopez header midway through the first half was enough for the visiting Othello Huskies to hold on for a big 1-0 win at Pullman on Tuesday afternoon.

Lopez pounded home a far post cross from Jorge Campos and that score would aid Othello to even its record to 2-2 on the season.

Othello goaltender Martel Saucedo recorded the team's first shutout of the season as the Huskies outshot Pullman 15-7.

The win give the Huskies momentum heading into their league clash against contenders, the Quincy Jacks tomorrow evening.

WARDEN - Class 2B here they come.

The Warden Cougars opened up Central Washington South 2B play Tuesday with a resounding 4-0 home win over Bridgeport.

The teams went into halftime with the one goal being the difference and then the Cougars took control.

"With the wind in our backs we started to pressure Bridgeport from their own area and this worked," Warden head coach Ed Aguilar said.

At the 55-minute mark, Warden's Osbaldo Alba scored off of a direct kick from about 20 yards out to double his team's lead.

Then as the game rolled on Warden got a goal from Camacho via a header and a scoring strike from Elias Valencia who headed home a direct kick from 10-feet out.

Valencia assisted Camacho's goal.

Warden outshot Bridgeport 12-3.
