Virgie F. Askwig

Age 89

Passed away March 24, 2011, of natural causes. Virgie was born on June 26, 1921, in Copan, OK, where she grew up. She graduated from Sinton High School in Sinton, Texas, in 1939, and in 1941, she moved to Chico, CA, where she attended business college and then worked as a secretary at the Diamond Match Company. Virgie Gilliland married her handsome B-29 pilot, Glenn W. Askwig, on November 6, 1942, in Reno, NV. After the war, Virgie and Glenn moved to Moses Lake, WA, where they owned and operated Auzy's Spudnut Shop and raised a family of four children. Virgie and Glenn moved to Billings, MT, in 1980 where they resided until 1991 when they made their final move to Spokane, WA. Virgie served as President of the Officers' Wives Club, was active in the Republican Party and the Republican Women's Club, and was an avid bridge player. Virgie was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Glenn, in 2006, and by her parents, Ora and Albert Gilliland, and nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son, Glenn W. Askwig, Jr. (Linda) of Roswell, New Mexico; daughters Linda Weber (Dick) of Joplin, MO; Sally Grabicki (Tony) and Tomi Sue Morford (Fred) of Spokane; and grandchildren: Glenn W. Askwig III, Kasey Weber Williamson, Eric and Mark Weber, Anthony and Shelby Grabicki, Andrea Morford Ketner and Kyle Morford; and twelve great-grandchildren. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 31, 2011, at the Heritage Funeral Home, 508 N. Government Way, Spokane, WA, 99224. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
