QUINCY - Rivals, Quincy and Ephrata met in a non-league soccer match on Saturday and the host Jacks found what they needed to win just in time.

After a 1-1 draw going into the locker room, Quincy erupted for four second half goals and would pull past the visiting Tigers 5-2.

"We were quite flat in the first half of the game," Quincy head coach Thomas Turner said. "But, we turned it on in second half."

Quincy (4-1), trailed 1-0 in the 20th minute when Ephrata got a score from Nemanja Pribilovic.

Quincy would score before halftime to tie and then would score four goals in the first 20 minutes after intermission.

Frank Medina scored in the 28th and 43rd minutes to give Quincy the lead over Ephrata (1-4) and would score again in the 58th minute after a Jesus Diaz penalty kick in the 48th minute.

Carlos Villagomez wrapped up the Quincy scoring in the 61st minute.

AJ Storz recorded a penalty kick score for Ephrata in the 79th minute to narrow the gap.

"The match started well as we combined well, knocked the ball around and created good opportunities," Ephrata head coach Keith Laughlin said. "Then we got impatient and direct and gave up possession too easily, creating opportunities for Quincy.  They capitalized.  The team battled hard and never quit.  The work rate was good but we seem to not be able to maintain our concentration for the entire match."

ROYAL 4

Highland 2

ROYAL CITY - It's as good a high five as the Royal Knights could ask for.

A strong start to the 2011 season continued for the Knights on Saturday as they moved to 5-0 overall and in South Central Athletic Conference (SCAC) play with a hard fought 4-2 win over Highland.

"Another good performance from the boys that couldn't have started better," Royal head coach Jens Jensen said. "The boys pushed forward from the kick off."

Alex Ramirez scored in the game's second minute off of  a penalty kick and Adam Martinez followed that up with a fourth-minute tally to keep his strong play going and Royal led 2-0 before breaking a sweat.

Martinez scored off of a Luis Esquivel feed.

Highland cut the gap to 2-1 in the 26th minute but then Esquivel scored off of a free kick two minutes later and the Knights led 3-1 by halftime.

"Highland's goal served as a wake up call for the boys," Jensen said. "On Luis' goal, the ball was dropped into a dangerous area and neither the keeper or the defender, who was being pressured, got to the ball and it bounced into the far post."

Martinez scored again in the 51st minute to give Royal a strong 4-1 lead that would hold up.

"At half we made a couple of adjustments intended to stop the Highland forwards from receiving the ball and also provided some help in the midfield," Jensen said. "All of this generally kept all of the Scotties' attempts on goal well outside the danger area."

WARDEN 3

Kiona-Benton 0

BENTON CITY - A stronger offensive attack helped the Warden Cougars to their first win of the season on Sunday.

Warden outshot hosts Kiona-Benton 15-2 and rolled to a 3-0 win to move their record to 1-1 on the young season.

Jesus Rangel scored via a penalty kick in the game's eighth minute and Elias Valencia scored the first of two goals in the 20th minute to put away a Fernando Landeros service with a header.

Valencia wrapped up the game's scoring with another tally in the 33rd minute.

"The game wasn't very pretty but we played better in defense keeping the Ki Be forwards out of range to score," Warden head coach Ed Aguilar said.
