Two fourth-place results for Chiefs track

SPOKANE - Two fourth place finishes were recorded by the Moses Lake High School track teams at Saturday's Washington vs. Idaho Smack Down at Central Valley High School in Spokane.

The boys scored 30.5 points and the girls ended up with 35.5 as Central Valley swept the competition titles.

"It was a very cold day for the chiefs with snow on the ground but we still competed," Moses Lake boys head coach Kevin Whittall said.

The best results for the boys came via third-place finishes by Cameron Ballard (high jump, 5'4"), Jordan Koon (long jump, 19'1.75"), and the 4x800-meter relay team of Taz Gaddis, Lowell Kirkwood, Atsushi Nakamura, and Jose Sofield (9:34.51).

Timothy Johnson (110-meter hurdles, 17.20), Brandon Bradley (shot put, 44'7.25"), William Shestock (javelin, 115'10"), Ben Crowell (high jump, 5'4"), Cameron Law (pole vault, 11'6"), and the 4x100-meter relay team of Brian Chamberlain, Jared Crowell, Koon, and Steven Cline (46.77) all took fourth in their respective events.

Jordan Loera paced the girls' team with two second-place finishes in the javelin (104') and the triple jump (32'3.75"). She also took third in the long jump (15'11").

Other third-place finishers include, Caylah Lunning (100-meters, 13.40), Sadie Nielsen (discus, 104'8"), Selina Koon (high jump, 4'8"), and the 4x100-meter relay team of Krystal Fick, Kayla Grigg, Loera, and Lunning (54.9).

Hannah Marsh, Julia Sheremet, Selina Koon, and Holly Martin took fourth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:56.64).

Papa Wells success for Ephrata

YAKIMA  - East Valley High School was the site of this year's Eugene "Papa" Wells Track and Field Invitational on Saturday and the Ephrata teams came to show they have plenty of firepower.

No team standings were announced but there was no denying the successes of Ephrata while athletes from Quincy, Royal and Soap Lake also made their mark.

Three athletes from the Columbia Basin came away with top prizes in Yakima, including Ephrata's Jacob Green as the only double champion.

Green not only won the 400-meter run (51.47) but he was also a part of the 4x400-meter relay team made up of Steven Monda, Kyle Charles, Oscar Matus and himself that took the top spot with a time of 3.31.78.

Kendahl Hintz of Ephrata took the crown in pole vault (9'6") and Quincy's Armando Tafoya was first in the shot put (52'6").

The Tigers had a bevy of top five finishers with a laundry list of elite individual performances from the girls' side, Danielle Friend (3,200-meters, third place, 12:33.13; 1.600-meters, fourth place, 5:48.01), Abby Smith (shot put, second place, 38'6"), Kristen McDonnell (javelin, third place, 104'2"), Erin Monda (300-meter hurdles, fourth place, 52.82), Nikki Pope (long jump, fourth place, 15'3.5"), and Hannah Gunderson (800-meters, fifth place. 2:40.53).

The Ephrata relay teams of Taylor Barnes, Monda, Julia Weaver, and Lauren Yount (4x200-meter, tie for third place, 1:58.70), Barnes, Monda, Heidi Buchert, and Yount (4x400-meter, fourth place, 4:34.15), and Weaver, Jordan Larkin, Barnes, and Yount (4x100-meters, fifth place, 54.54) were top five finishers.

Quincy's Jazmine Perez kickstarted her expected strong senior season with a second-place finish in the 400-meter run (1:02.37) and a fourth-place result in the 100-meter run (13.35).

Joining Green in the top five finishers category were his teammates Micah Ohl (100-meters, second place, 11.42 and 200-meters, third place, 23.61), Josh Hill (300-meter hurdles, fourth place, 45.76), Evan McMartin (110-meter hurdles, fourth place, 17.15), and Layton Lange (triple jump, fifth place, 40'3").

The Knights of Royal were paced by Ethan Tonnemaker's second-place finish in the 3,200-meter run (10:16.14), and Laddie Goroski (44.30) and Dylan Delay (45.84) who finished second and fifth respectively in the 300-meter hurdles.    Top Quincy boys were Ian Huxtable (long jump, third place, 19'10") and Adrian Diaz (3,200-meters, fourth place, 10:27.58).

Soap Lake's David Coreas took third in the 400-meter run with a time of 53.71.
