MOSES LAKE — The community is invited to a spaghetti feed Friday night to help a Moses Lake family cope with cancer costs.

The benefit is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Knolls Vista Elementary School cafeteria and gym, located at 454 W. Ridge Rd., Moses Lake.

The fundraiser’s original intent was to help fund a special trip for the Randy and Dorothy Peterson family, said school Principal Mike Riggs.

Randy has cancer, which metastasized to his spleen and liver, Riggs said. He is in hospice now.

Now it appears the funds are used to assist the family with expenses related to his passing, Riggs said.

“This is a real special family to our school,” he explained.

The parents often volunteer at the school.

Their daughter is a fourth-grader and son is a sixth-grader.

Through her work with the Williams Corporation, Dorothy helped the school win grants and support to bring the Pacific Science Center’s Science on Wheels program to Moses Lake.

“She is a very modest, very quiet person,” Riggs said. “She’s extremely bright and knows a lot about science.”

Riggs said organizers are hoping at least 300 people attend the event.

A silent auction and music from the band Avocet is also offered.Riggs is a guest drummer for the band.

This week, students are taking part in a “Caps on for Cancer” event.

They are allowed to wear a hat or cap during class if they donate $1 per day to the family.
