Suspected metal thieves held at gunpoint
Two men were arrested for allegedly attempting to steal metal from a farm, using a cutting torch in the back of a pickup.
EPHRATA - Two Moses Lake men were arrested for suspected metal theft after a farmer caught them and held them at gunpoint.
Johnny F. Mitchell, 46, and David A. Thornton, 53, were arrested by Grant County Sheriff's deputies Thursday for burglary in the second degree, trespassing in the second degree, attempted theft in the first degree and malicious mischief, according to Kyle Foreman, Grant County Sheriff's Office public information officer.
A farmer discovered two men on a remote part of property near Road 4 Northeast in Mae Valley, near Moses Lake, according to Foreman. They were using an oxyacetylene torch, carried in the bed of a pickup, to cut apart a paving roller from a piece of heavy equipment.
The farmer confronted the suspects, held them at gunpoint and called an off-duty deputy, who summoned more deputies to arrest the two suspects.
"I am really pleased with the solidarity which has grown between our citizens and the sheriff's office," Sheriff Tom Jones stated. "That strengthened relationship is making a difference in our efforts to reduce all categories of crime."
The sheriff's office is interested in information regarding crime and suspicious activity, Jones added.
