Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather passed into eternity on February 23, 2011 at Lakeridge. Richard was born in Spokane, WA on Feb. 8, 1931 to Melvin and Madelene Zornes. He graduated from Hill Military Academy School, Portland, OR in 1950 and joined the US Army to serve his country. After his first year in the military he married his sweetheart Marylou McBride on Dec. 30th, 1951. Richard went on to become a commissioned officer to the rank of LTC working in Military Bomb Disposal Units in and to include stations at Germany, WA, MD, NY and AL. In this capacity he also served with the Secret Service for Vice Presidents Hubert Humphrey and Richard Nixon. He retired to Moses Lake in 1971 where he was best known as the "Chico Man" when he became owner of Chico's Pizza Parlor after the death of his father. Dick also served as Elected Grant County Coroner from 1977 to 1985 and as Elected Grant County Commissioner until 1989. He was also a Deputy Sheriff Reserve Officer and active in the Masonic Lodge and Shiners to help children with disabilities. He relished his time on his boat with the Moses Lake Yacht Club and fishing with his friends and sons in coastal waters off of Alaska and Washington. He served faithfully in the Moses Lake Lions Club. He believed service to others and country was his greatest calling. He was a kind man who leaves big shoes to fill and most will remember his very jovial spirit and mild manner. He was known to have had a knack knowing how to put people at ease.

Dick was preceded in death by his grandparents Millard W. and Willa M. Zornes, Joe and Rose Bruce, his brother Jack R. Zornes, his mother Madelene V. Geottlich, all of Spokane and his parents Melvin W. Zornes and step-mother Lois I. Zornes of Moses Lake.

Dick is survived by his wife Marylou Zornes of 59 years, his two sons, CPT (RET) Mitchell D. Zornes of Moses Lake and SFC (RET) Jeffrey E. (Sharon) Zornes of Stafford, VA. He will be missed by his two grandchildren Jennifer K. Zornes of New Holland, MI and PV2 Thomas J. Zornes (Marissa) of Ft. Hood, TX, his half brother David R. Zornes of Elko, Nevada and half sister Sandy K. Zornes of Moses Lake, also; several nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.

The family would like to take this time to thank Betty Stearns who lovingly took care of Dad for the past few years to allow Marylou time to work and also to the staff of both Summerwood Alzheimer's Special Care Center and the Lake Ridge A Solana Alzheimer's Care Center for their help and care of our Father and Husband.

No services or burial will be held, all final arrangements will be taken care of through the Neptune Society for cremation and spreading of ashes at a predetermined site. In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of choice.
