Reader wants discussion to solve problem

| June 24, 2011 6:00 AM

Who is the winner when we play the blame game? Please, blame me for the problems that are in the schools today. I have had a child or grandchild in school since the early 70s. So, I guess, that qualifies me to accept the blame. The problems we have now were there when my kids started school but I was silent. I held my tongue when my kids were bullied and harassed and the staff did nothing. I have been quiet when a student asks for help and is told, "I explained that already, so figure it out for yourself." I did nothing when our Legislators decided truant students should be jailed as punishment for their crime. I didn't say a word when God was removed from the school. So, you see, I am to blame for all that has gone wrong in the school system. The word respect has been tossed around in these discussions and the best definition for respect comes from the Scriptures, "Think more highly of others than you do of yourself."

I have always trusted the school staff to do what is best for the students. However, society seems to have influenced them also. So, do we blame society? Oh, I am society also. Perhaps, rather than blame, we should all accept responsibility for our part and do our part to solve the problem. Some good, candid communication would be a good place to begin.
