Muller-Richter team takes member-guest tourney
CRESCENT BAR - Chuck Muller and Phil Richer combined their talents to shoot an aggregate 161.5 to take first place in the first division of the first annual Crescent Bar Member-Guest Golf Tournament on June 4-5.
Muller represented the Crescent Bar Golf Course. Richter is from west of the Cascade Mountains. The score was the total of four nines of three different formats.
On Saturday, the two-man teams played one ball with alternating shots through each front nine hole. The back nine format was a team net best ball.
The format for Sunday's first nine was team net best ball. The back nine was the total of the two individual net scores.
The weekend started with a horse race on Friday, which was not an official part of the tourney. Jerry Hoene and Even Stewart won that event. Richter and Doug Carl finished second and Don Richie and Dave Runstrom took third place.
Second place in the first division went to George Phelps and Chuck Motzkus with 163.25. Gordon Lennon and Dan Runstrum took third with 163.50, and Jim Robinson and Ted Rich finished fourth with 166.
The winners in the second division with 164.75 were Orlan Wood and Steve Paretti. They barely edged out the second-place team of Tom Harris and Dick Campbell with 165.25.
Third place in the division went to Dean and Tony Etzhorn with 169.5. John Kiehl and John Pavel took fourth place with 173.
The tournament featured some fine shots on the par-3 holes. The longest of the four closest-to-the-pin shots was six feet, two inches.
That effort was turned in by Motzkus on hole No. 3/12 on Saturday. Ryan Harris topped that on hole No. 5/14 with a shot that finished three feet from the hole.
On Sunday, the shot-making was even better. Robinson put his tee shot three feet from the pin on hole No. 5/14. Richter finished 1-6 from the pin on hole No. 3/12
Wood was the accurate drive winner on Saturday with a shot that was only 12 inches off center. John Kiehl matched that effort on Sunday.
Saturday's long putt competition went to Vic Bonin when he nailed a shot from 32 feet, four inches. On Sunday, Harris drained a putt of 29-4 to win the contest.
