DESERT AIRE - Jack and Betty Pogoreic have some decisions to make after a fire destroyed their home near the golf course at Desert Aire on May 26.

"They got out with the clothes on their backs," Desert Aire resident and real estate agent Bill McCaffery said.

The fire, at 107 Golf Court North, occurred at about 8 p.m., according Grant County Fire District No. 8 Chief Dave Hargroves. It resulted in a total loss, according to Jack Pogoreic.

"Two sections of the roof caved in," he said.

Hargroves's volunteers were joined by volunteer staff from the Hanford Fire Department and Adams County Fire District No. 5. There were a total of 33 emergency personnel and 13 emergency vehicles.

"The last vehicle to leave got out at 4 a.m.," Hargroves said.

Pogoreic believes the fire started with one of the golf cars. One of them had been plugged into the charger at about 7 p.m. after a round of golf.

"We sat down for some dinner and, all of a sudden, there was smoke all around," Pogoreic said.

The Pogoreics rushed to the garage, from which the smoke was coming, and were too late to do anything. They needed to get out and call 9-1-1.

"The garage was so hot and so black from smoke that I couldn't see a thing," Pogoreic said.

Hargroves said the fire marshal concurs on the cause. He said the fire marshal believes the fire started with a charger or a receptacle.

"It was an electrical fire," Hargroves said.

The Pogoreics are staying with Jerry and Janet Alfarone temporarily at their Desert Aire home. Pogoreic said the couple's home and vehicles were fully insured.

However, the Pogoreics aren't sure what's next. They could take up permanent residence in Arizona, where they have a home. They could rebuild here.

For now, they await word from insurance.
