Two young women named Sandra earn top honors at Wahluke

MATTAWA - Sandra Medrano and Sandra Sanchez walked off with the highest honors at senior awards night at Wahluke High School on May 23.

Medrano was named the valedictorian for the class of 2011. Sanchez was named the salutatorian.

In addition, each young woman was announced the winner of a full-ride scholarship. Medrano won a Gates Millennium Award to the college of her choice. Sanchez received an Act Six Leadership Award to Heritage University

Medrano was recognized for her academic achievement across the United States. Her list of scholarships reads like a Who's Who of American institutions of higher learning.

The list includes Seattle University, Washington State University, Wesleyan University, Georgetown University, Pomona College, Vassar College, University of Puget Sound, Reed College and Yale University.

Wahluke senior awards night was like a girls' night out. They got most of the attention. Of the top 18 academic achievers, only four were boys.

Those seniors graduating with high honors include Gladys Martinez, Alfredo Manzo and Gabriela Chacon.

Those graduating with honors include Elinn Ocampo, Suleyma Barajas, Joanna Ramirez, Jaqueline Oropeza, Luis Martinez, Sandra Perez, Angeles Mendoza, Laura Tapia, Melissa Martinez, Jazmin Calvario, Andrea Robles, Isaac Cantu, Jose Castaneda.
