MOSES LAKE - A tough first three games didn't slow down the Moses Lake Dunes' 13-and-under Babe Ruth Developmental team this weekend as they continue to work toward July's district tournament.

The Dunes (3-10) lost their first three contests before bouncing back with a 6-3 win over Othello on Sunday at Moses Lake High School.

Their win came against the same team they opened the weekend against, losing an 11-8 decision on Saturday.

In the Dunes' win, Hakeem Olaniyan pitched four innings and allowed one earned run for the win.

"We played well in every aspect of the game," Dunes head coach Jesse Heaverlo said. "We had a good attitude and effort that led to executing at the plate and in the field.  We controlled the tempo of the game by throwing strikes.  It was the first time this season we've put a complete game together."

Joel Torres led the Dunes at the plate, finishing 2-for-3.

In the teams' first game, the Dunes shook off some cobwebs before making things interesting.

Trevor Garry went 4-for-4, Xavier Rodriguez finished 2-for-2, Micah Sanchez batted 2-for-3 and Zach Askin wrapped up the contest batting 2-for-4 in the Dunes' loss.

"After a shaky defensive start we battled back from a significant deficit to bring the tying run to the plate," Heaverlo said.

The game went six innings due to be shortened for its extended period of play.

They followed up that near loss with a tough 10-0 defeat at the hands of Walla Walla.

Torres went 2-for-2 at the plate.

"Seven walks put us in an early hole and we never got our heads back in the game," Heaverlo said.

On Sunday, before the win over Othello, Rodriguez's double was the lone bright spot in a 12-2 loss to Wenatchee.

"We got an opportunity to play some teams with some older kids and I'm confident with the right attitude and effort we will be better prepared to compete at the district tournament in July," Heaverlo said.

The Dunes' season continues Wednesday with a doubleheader against the U-14 Moses Lake Crawdads at MLHS starting at 6 p.m.
