THANK YOU Reader thanks Memorial Poppy support

| June 3, 2011 6:00 AM

For 90 years the American Legion Auxiliary has distributed the Memorial Poppy to remind Americans that millions sacrificed their lives and health to keep our nation strong and free.

The poppy grew wild on the battlefields of Flanders Field. In the minds of WWI soldiers it became a symbol of the sacrifice they had endured. The poppy flourished among the shelled buildings and bomb-scarred landscape. Like the blood that was shed there, its brilliant red bloom became a sign of hope and renewal for those who lived and walked away. For those who would never leave, those who had given their lives, it is a perpetual memorial to their bravery.

American Veterans brought home that image and planted it with the auxiliary, where it blooms annually to benefit those who serve our country. Memorial Poppy contributions are devoted entirely to rehabilitation and assistance for veterans and their families. The American Legion Auxiliary Poppy is hand-made by veterans who receive payment for each poppy made. Additionally, all contributions to the poppy program are designated to benefit American Veterans.

On behalf of those veterans and the American Legion Auxiliary, thank you for caring and your donations. I personally want to say thank you to the American Legion Post 209 Moses Lake for their support in distributing the poppies.
