MOSES LAKE - Donna Godfrey, 50, and her daughter, Elizabeth, 14, have found a new twist on a known exercise.

It's also versatile enough to challenge both their fitness levels

Using boards, they were taking Julie Johnson's "Yoga on the Water" class at Blue Heron Park on Moses Lake Wednesday.

The new business started in June.

Boards were unloaded at the park's boat launch. Class members got in the water, jumped on the boards and paddled over to the swimming area, where they practiced yoga moves on the boards.

Donna said they attended Julie Johnson's first class in June and have been to almost every single one two to three times per week.

"I like the water and the sunshine," Donna says. "It feels good on the boards and they make it fun and more difficult. It's a blast."

Before she started taking the classes, she walked and did yoga stretches for her lower back.

Her daughter, Elizabeth, said she likes "the exercise, the challenge and the sunshine."

Donna commented how versatile the class is.

Elizabeth and instructor Julie perform moves Donna can't, but Donna can still challenge herself and complete a good workout.

Julie and her husband, Bob Johnson, both of Moses Lake, each teach classes for their business, which is called "Gone SUP'n (stand up paddle).

Bob surfed in his youth in California. He's always enjoyed the ocean and the waves.

He was surfing in Hawaii a few years ago and saw stand up paddle for the first time. He thought of bringing the activity to Moses Lake.

He and Julie aim to offer a fun way for families to enjoy each other's company and also get fit.

Julie explains the boards "are the latest fitness sensation and fastest growing water sport across the globe."

The boards look like large surfboards and are moved by the standing paddler using a long paddle.

"Fitness professionals have flocked to stand up paddling not only because it's fun and the cardiovascular benefits of the workout are superb, but also for the core-based balance challenge that the board provides to their clients," Julie stated. "The result of this wonderful combination is a new sport that is easy for anyone to do."

Their business provides beginner stand up paddle lessons, yoga on the water, paddleboard fitness lessons, date night paddles for customers 21 and older and paddle parties.

Private yoga classes can also be arranged.
