Benjamin Hankins

| July 16, 2011 3:00 AM

Benjamin Ross Hankins, 85, of Ephrata, WA passed away peacefully on July 9, 2011 at Quincy Valley Medical Center. He was born in Sapulpa, OK on April 27, 1926 to Benjamin Franklin and Mary Ola Hankins. Ben came to Washington State with his brother in 1949, where they found work and settled near Ephrata.

Benjamin was drafted during World War II and served his country as PFC in troop D, 7th Cavalry. While in the military, he served in the Pacific theater and earned many ribbons, three bronze stars, and one good conduct medal. He was honorably discharged on August 12, 1946.

He married Roberta Jean Butts on June 10, 1966 and together they raised three children in Bothell, WA. Ben lost his wife to cancer in 1993 and never remarried.

Although sometimes cantankerous, Ben had a generous heart and never turned away someone in need. He enjoyed socializing and browsing for bargains. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to found Ben's Pony Rides, one of his most fulfilling retirement projects. His pony ring could be seen every weekend throughout the Puget Sound Area, distinguishable by its colorful parachute top. He has a following of loyal riders and though of them like his own children. Some children became so fond of Ben that they called him every night to say goodnight to the cowboy. And he waited by the phone so he could take their calls.

Ben had a good sense of humor and was a gifted storyteller. His stories could go on and on, but it was always worth the wait. He once told his daughter, "I never let the truth get in the way of a good story." A master BS-er, indeed. The twinkle in his eye and his mischievous smile endeared him to many. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, the Eagles, and the Moose.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Lillian, wife Roberta, brother Mondell, and numerous dear friends. He leaves behind his three children Benjamin Robert, Jane Elizabeth, and Emily Jean Freeburg, and one grandchild Benjamin Nolan Hankins. He will be greatly missed by us all.

The family would like to thank the staff at Wenatchee Valley Medical Center Radiology, Central Washington Hospital, and Quincy Valley Medical Center for their compassionate care of Benjamin. A graveside service will be held on July 22, 2011 at 11:00 at Purdy & Walters Floral Hills in Lynnwood, WA.
