Deep Water Concert Series a casino's play for stature

MANSON - If the phrase "Deep Water Concert Series" sounds new to you, it is.

Deep Water Concert Series is an attempt by the Colville Nation to turn the Mill Bay Casino into a destination. And the Colvilles are going all-in, according to new marketing manager Dena Jackson.

"We've invested quite a lot," she said. "We're trying to put us on the map. Lake Chelan (nearby) is a destination resort. We're trying to provide quality entertainment for the Wenatchee Valley."

The Deep Water Concert Series launched on May 20 with Smokey Robinson. It was not sold out, but "the turnout was very nice," Jackson said.

There was a Three Dog Night/America concert last Saturday, and all seating was sold. There were additional sales of wrist bands for standing room at $25 each.

This Saturday, Deep Water will welcome Buddy Guy. On Sunday the performer will be Robert Cray.

"We're packaging it as a blues weekend," Jackson said.

The venue at the Mill Bay Casino is named Deep Water Amphitheatre because of Lake Chelan, which is visible to concert goers.

This is the first year for Deep Water. It has 1,392 seats, and 18 events have been scheduled.

Next up, after the blues weekend, is a show that could set the early attendance record. The Doobie Brothers, who are still a hit with the baby boom generation, will appear on Saturday, July 9.

Jackson has been with the Colville casino operation for 15 years. She was manager of the Okanogan Bingo Casino before taking her new post. She's excited.

"We're trying to take Mill Bay in a new direction," she said.

Ticket prices vary, Jackson said, because the costs for the acts vary. She goes through a booking agency to find them.

"We select an artist an make an offer, and they take it or leave it," she said.

The Deep Water Concert Series through Sept. 23 includes MMA Battle by the Bay on July 16, Los Lobos & Los Lonely Boys on July 21, Chris Isaak on July 28, The Drifters, The Coasters and the Platters on Aug. 5, Dierks Bentley on Aug. 12, Blake Shelton on Aug. 20, Tommy James & The Shondells on Aug. 25, Kenny Rogers on Aug. 28, Cheech & Chong on Sept. 3, The Temptations and Four Tops on Sept. 17 and Peter Frampton on Sept. 23.
