GOVERNMENT

| January 14, 2011 5:00 AM

Reader would like to see positive change

I find myself looking back at the last couple years with sheer disbelief at what has been going on in our country. Both political parties are equally guilty.

My grandfather and great-grandfather, who fought in both World Wars, would be rolling over in their graves if they were to see our present day situations.

Don't be fooled into thinking that the new members of Congress are going to make things much better. They won't.

Grant County's government is dysfunctional too. I've had the opportunity to deal with many government entities throughout the Northwest, and by far, Grant County has the most divisive officials I have ever had to work with. These officials say one things, but do something entirely different. They make requirements, which some "special" folks aren't held to, while others are held to impossible standards. It also appears that they will outright deceive if it serves their purpose.

They ignore constituents' concerns with condescending silence.

Often, six-figure attorney fees are necessary to get an equitable response.

Government has created many laws to protect and insulate their own from liability of their actions.

Many people I've met have concerns about Grant County, but few stand up to question them.

The county has a public comment period every Monday at 10:30 a.m. Surprisingly, nobody ever shows up. Why?

If you have concerns, voice your grievances. Help and support others who are being treated unfairly. If enough people did so, perhaps our nation could get back on track. Start at the local level and maybe it will trickle up to the national level.

Remember, your are the government. Get involved.

Our children are counting on you to peacefully ask for governmental accountability instead of fruitlessly talking amongst yourselves. But, please, do so in a civil, non-violent fashion.
