MOSES LAKE — Groups of families and friends enjoyed a free

fireworks show and food in Moses Lake to ring in 2011 Friday

night.

Mario and Victoria Lugo, of Moses Lake, brought their two

daughters, Sierra, 6, and Megan, 4, to the New Year’s Eve event in

downtown Moses Lake.

They attended the 10 p.m. show so their daughters didn’t have to

stay up too late to see fireworks.

The theme from “Star Wars” was played to accompany the show.

Kids not used to the crackle and snap of fireworks put their hands

over their ears, but kept looking at the sky to see the bursts of

bright colors.

Free coffee, hot cocoa, apple cider and pretzels were served.

Volunteer Rick Lloyd of Spokane said about 275 pretzels were given

to audience members.

Volunteer Bill Burke said 250 cups of hot cocoa, 250 cups of coffee

and 175 cups of apple cider were also distributed.

Many families first went to the Moses Lake Museum and Art Center to

help their kids make penguin hats before heading to the fireworks

show.

“They think it’s really cool,” he said.

Moses Lake Mayor Jon Lane spoke at the event, telling everyone what

a great community they had and commented about the great community

event.

“It’s been a great year,” Lane said. “We had some great things

happen.”

He

talked about the Moses Lake Museum and Art Center preparing to move

into the Civic Center, which will provide 10,000 square feet of

room for the museum.

Also in 2011, Fairchild Air Force Base airmen are temporarily

coming to Moses Lake while Fairchild’s runway is resurfaced.

The community is invited to an event Feb. 1 at the Grant County

International Airport to welcome the airmen, he said.
