Ephrata warns of cold weather

EPHRATA — Ephrata city staff are warning residents to take

precautions during this weekend’s cold weather.

The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures between 7

and 15 degrees. The city experiences at least one cold snap per

winter, according to a city statement.

“Taking time to prepare now, while the weather is relatively

pleasant, just makes good sense,” according to the city’s

statement. “The long-range forecast for this winter is for

below-average temperatures and above-average precipitation.”

City staff are advising residents to take steps to prepare for

freezing pipes, including protecting the bottom of their residence

from the cold and wind, shielding or insulating outside faucets and

adding insulation to water meters less than 2 feet underground. If

residents are going to be away from home, they are advised to

cabinets and leave a thin stream of water flowing, according to the

city’s statement.

The city also recommends residents inspect chimneys, vents and

makes sure there is enough space around any heat source, according

to the city’s statement.

“Perhaps the most important thing we can do, before or during

inclement conditions, is to check on one another,” according to the

city’s statement. “Be active in your neighborhood and look in on

neighbors, especially those that may need extra care during severe

weather.”
