WARDEN storms to ACH sub district championship
COULEE CITY -- Points totals for the teams at the 2B/1B sub district tournament at Almira/Coulee-Hartline Saturday were still not available but there still remained little doubt.
The Warden Cougars were the resounding champions according to site administrator, ACH head coach Brandon Walsh.
"I can say that Warden won the tournament in dominate fashion by at least over 100 points ahead of Reardan," Walsh said.
Walsh's Warriors took sixth.
The top six wrestlers in each class advanced to next week's regionals.
A total of 22 Cougars wrestlers have qualified directly into the regional stage.
Warden's nine champions included Jesus Dominguez (103-pounds), Javier Tapia (112-pounds), J.P. Martinez (119-pounds), Carlos Gomez (125-pounds), Scott Henderson (135-pounds), Sam Suarez (140-pounds), Hector Camacho (152-pounds), Hugo Rodriguez (171-pounds), and Matthew DeLeon (285-pounds)
Other Cougars qualifiers were Ramses Rodelo (112-pounds, second place), Saul Hinojosa (119-pounds, third place), Anthony Platas (130-pounds, third place), Ernesto Orozco (130-pounds, fourth place), Cesar Rangel (140-pounds, fourth place), Carmello DeLeon (145-pounds, fourth place), Kenny Sullivan (160-pounds, third place), Cruz Pruneda (160-pounds, sixth place), Eleu Gonzales (171-pounds, third place), Adam Hansen (189-pounds, third place), Nick Guerra (189-pounds, fifth place), Gerino Lunas (215-pounds, second place), and Vicente Caballero (285-pounds, sixth place),
Walsh saw eight of his Warriors advance on and keep their season alive.
Those ACH wrestlers were, Tyler Weimerskirch (125-pounds, third place), Trevor McCleary (130-pounds, alternate), Cody McCleary (135-pounds, third place), Cody Payne (145-pounds, fifth place), 152 - RC Carstense (152-pounds, fifth/sixth place), Brandon Buche (215-pounds, champion), Zack Correll (285-pounds, third place), and Jesse Billups (285-pounds, fourth place).
"Buche wrestled the best he has all year," Walsh said. "He's peaking at the right time and it showed in him winning the championship against a very physical, tough kid in Luna.
"RC's opponent for fifth place wrestled five matches on the day and could not wrestle the sixth by rule," Walsh said. "Their match for placing into regionals will be wrestled next Friday at the very beginning of the tournament)."
Walsh was happy with his team's performance.
"Over all, I was pleased with how the tournament went," Walsh said. "Our team is so young and for many of them this was their first experience at the post season level. It showed up in some of the matches, but over all I thought we won the matches we should have."
