Girls basketball: MOSES LAKE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 71, COLUMBIA BASIN SECONDARY SCHOOL 8
MOSES LAKE - Despite being physically overpowering and carrying a deeper roster than the Columbia Basin Secondary School Phoenix, the visiting Moses Lake Christian Academy Lady Lions came to take care of business on Friday night.
Taking an 18-5 after the first quarter, the Lady Lions would outscore the Phoenix 46-0 over the next two quarters to roll to a 71-8 North Central Washington 1B league win.
The Academy (15-4, 8-0) have already clinched the league title and will be the number one seed at the district tournament.
"Columbia Basin Secondary is in a tough spot with a lack of experience and numbers," Lady Lions head coach Bryce McPartland said of the five-player Phoenix team. "But they're also very positive and the kids they do have play hard all game long. With a little more experience, I think you'll see them improve."
McPartland also noted his team's slow start before turning up the heat.
"We came out a little sluggish tonight, after wrapping up league on Tuesday," he said. "That's my fault for not having them quite ready to go that first quarter."
It still worked out for the Lady Lions who had four double-figure scorers.
McKenna Walker led the way with 21 points while Madison Yamane scored 15 points, Kristina Firouzi poured in 13 points and Rachel Verhage chipped in with 10 points.
Yamane also had 11 rebounds and four assists while Verhage secured 10 rebounds.
The Academy forced 40 Phoenix (0-12, 0-7) turnovers.
Jerinn Anderson led the Secondary School with five points.
McPartland was also pleased with the performance of improving eighth-grader Mikaela Loudon.
"Mikaela gave us some amazing minutes," McPartland said. "Her progress this year has been astounding. She and Abby Garrett gave us a great lift off the bench and the two of them really locked down the Phoenix's perimeter game."
Loudon finished with three points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals.
