MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake Chiefs wrestling team got off on the right foot with a big win against Richland at Moses Lake High School last night. The Chiefs had little trouble with the visiting squad, winning eight of 14 matches to beat the Bombers 47-27.
"I thought we wrestled pretty well considering this was our first real full match of the season," coach Jamie Wise said. "But we'll be a much better team in a couple of weeks when we are in better shape and we have the kids certified at the right weights."
Moses Lake forfeited the first match at 182 pounds to the Bombers Cameron Simpson but came back to win the next two when Derek Fredricksen, 195, pinned (4:31) Richland's Mitch Lauterbach and Jonathan Perales, 220, pinned (0:33) the Bombers Forrest Howell.
The biggest surprised of the match may have been the win by freshman Easton Castro, 160 pounds, who also won by pin (4:19) over David Crawford.
"Easton is going to be a good wrestler once he makes the adjustment form middle school to high school," Wise said. "He needs to build up his strength and be a little quicker, but I expect big things from him this year."
The Chiefs don't have another home match until after the first of the new year, but do have to wrestle a very tough schedule next week as they participate in three events in three days.
"We are sending the junior varsity team to the Bob Mars Invite in Kennewick this weekend, but the varsity team will stay home and practice as we get ready for a dual meet in Wenatchee next Thursday and the Inland Empire Invite," Wise said. "That's three straight days of wrestling and should be a good test of our skills."
