DESERT AIRE - George Sellers took the first hole of extended play to win the 2011 Desert Aire Men's Club match play championship at the Desert Aire Golf Course on July 28.

Sellers, the number 1 seed in the tourney, turned back David Sivills, last year's winner and this year's 42nd seed. He won 1-up in 19 holes.

The tournament is played with handicaps. Sellers is a 5, and Sivills is a 29.

Sivills was down two holes with two to go and (net) birdied 17 and 18 to win the holes and force overtime. But he ran out of gas on the first extra hole, the par-5 No.1.

Even though No. 1 was a 2-stroke hole for him, Sivills was able to post only a net par. Sellers had a gross - and net - birdie to win the hole and the match.

Sellers got to the final match with a 4-and-2 win over Richard Douglas in the round of 16, a 1-up, 19-hole victory over Keith Gilchrist in the quarterfinals and a 4-and-3 romp over Bob Schroeder in the semifinals.

Sivills made it to the final with a 1-up, 20-hole win over Jerry Touissant, a 2-up defeat of Howard Grondahl in the quarters and a 1-up squeaker over Tom Truax in the semis.
