Friends of Rachel secretly clean classrooms
MOSES LAKE - The Friends of Rachel recently had a unique idea.
The group decided to pull four names of teachers from a bucket and give their classrooms makeovers.
"I was one of the lucky four. I just wanted to express my gratitude for all that the Friends of Rachel do. It was so wonderful to have a sparkling-clean room," teacher Sharon Winningham said.
The students were divided into three groups and sent to a classroom.
No one had to worry about gathering the supplies because custodians Craig LeGrand and Jess Clem provided latex gloves and sanitizer. They sanitized and scrubbed the desks, counters, sinks, and white boards. On each white board the Friends of Rachel wrote, "Even though it took just a while, it was worth it to see you smile."
"I was a recipient of this blessing. You and your kiddos are making a difference. What I appreciate most is their attitude when they come to take my trash cans out. They aren't sullen or crabby about doing that job. They are excited to help and very pleasant," teacher Betsy Cornell said.
After the group had finished with the first four classrooms, they decided to clean more classrooms and drew five more names. In total, the Friends of Rachel cleaned nine classrooms.
"Thanks for all the great ways you are making a difference!" teacher Monica McAtee said.
I am proud to be a part of the Friends of Rachel group. It has impacted me and made me realize it is nice to hear someone say, "Thank you. You make a difference."
The Friends of Rachel will continue to do many other projects this year.
"If you attend Chief Moses Middle School, think about joining us. Remember, this is our school and we can make a difference," an organizer said.
The Friends of Rachel meet every Wednesday after school and on Mondays at lunch.
The Friends of Rachel have written thank-you letters to janitors, school board members, and bus drivers. They have cleaned old bleachers and picked up a whopping 16 bags of garbage around the school campus. In addition to these activities, they announce a new weekly challenge for all students.
