MOSES LAKE - Against the wind, about 200 runners, walkers and joggers were awaiting their turns to start portions of the Moses Lake Marathon Saturday morning.

The event was held for the first time as a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Columbia Basin and consisted of a marathon, half-marathon, 10K and 5K runs. The 5K was also considered a family walk.

Dawn Sherbourne, of Sprague, Wash., and her daughter, Alicia Serrato, of Moses Lake, were among the participants of the 5K family walk.

They said the event would be a good mother-daughter activity to take part in.

Sherbourne called the event good training for Bloomsday. She lost 35 pounds and wants to shed about 10 more.

Grant County Health District co-workers Ana Guilherme and Kellie Evens were also waiting to start the 5K.

Evens has been exercising about three times a week to prepare for event. Guilherme used the treadmill.

She explained they had "The Biggest Loser" weight loss competition going on at work.

"I think it's really exciting," Guilherme said about 5K.

Evens said they would like more events like this.

Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Brant Mayo said the event was "very well received."

"We were very excited about how it went," he commented. "Overall, the event went very well."

The club is looking at holding the event again next year.

"We will identify a date as soon as possible and let everyone know," he said.
