Huskies girls win tennis dual; boys fall short

OTHELLO - A strong showing up and down the Othello Lady Huskies' tennis lineup carried the day in a 5-0 sweep of Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) rivals Grandview on Saturday.

The Othello boys were also in contention for a win before falling 3-2 against the visiting Greyhounds.

On the girls side, the Lady Huskies, who are now 3-1 in the CWAC,  were sparked by wins at No. 1 singles, as Ashleigh Almaguer won 6-4, 6-2 and at No. 1 doubles where Emma Hymus and Jocelyn Cantu held on for a 6-4, 6-2 win.

"The girls were solid as usual as Emma and Jocelyn and two doubles, Amelia Roylance and Yanitta Cantu played well," Othello head coach Robert Pruneda said. "Shiela Cuellar had a great game at two singles and was able to win a close one.  She was consistent and was able to move her opponent all match to get a solid victory."

Cuellar won after losing the first 4-6 by rallying for 7-6 (2), 6-1 wins in the last two sets.

Roylance and Cantus won 7-5, 6-2 while the No. 3 doubles teams of Katrina Montemayor of Bethany Vargas captured a 6-3, 6-3 win.

The boys team struggled in singles play as both No. 1 (Andrew Login) and No. 2 Juan Gutierrez fell in straight sets.

Doubles play was much more competitive for the Huskies boys (3-1) as the No. 1 doubles team of Marcus Garza and Wesley Cogswell got through their match as easy 6-0, 6-3 victors.

At No. 2, Benn Taff and Alec Montemayor won 6-1, 6-2 but the No. 3 duo of Austin Roylance and Gabe Harris fell in a dramatic 6-4 third set to give Grandview the win.

"It was a thriller in Othello," Pruneda said. "Our number three doubles played well for the first time playing. I told the team that we were trying to make a run for the boys title.  It's in our reach so we are going to try to get it."
