MOSES LAKE - Hosting the second Columbia Basin Big Nine (CBBN) POD in girls golf, the Moses Lake Chiefs battled to a fifth place finish out of seven team at Moses Lake Golf Course on Monday.

Due to the extremely windy weather, the meet was reduced to a nine-hole competition. Gusts were reported as high as 45 mph according to coaches.

Richland won the round with a score of 185 and Moses Lake ended up with a final total of 235, ahead of Davis and Eisenhower.

The Chiefs remain in fifth place in the Big Nine standings.

"I was happy with both girls' scores under the conditions of the weather," Moses Lake head coach Lonny Brown said.

Leading the way for the Chiefs was Vanessa Goodwin who earned her second consecutive top 10 finish in POD play, ending up tenth with a score of 53, 13 strokes off the winning pace.

Kristi Brown ended up 15th with a score of 56 and was followed by teammates Jacy Jones and Katrina Ulnick who both scored 63s.

"We are all going to have to score a little better if we are going to jump a team or two," coach Brown said.

There are still three more PODS to be played before the district meet.

Moses Lake boys continue their rise

YAKIMA - The Yakima County Club was the scene for the CBBN boys second POD this season, Monday afternoon.

It was also the site of a Moses Lake Chiefs rise.

The Chiefs finished second with a team score of 338 and has now moved into third in CBBN standings with 10 points through two pods, trailing leaders Richland (14), and Walla Walla (11).

In Yakima, the Chiefs braved the elements to eclipse Walla Walla's 340.

"It was very windy but we played really well today," Moses Lake head coach J.R. Cox said. "We talk about playing in adverse conditions all the time. I remind them that we are all playing the same course, on the same day, at the same time with the same conditions. Today I felt it was the first time this season they just went out and played and didn't focus on the 25 mph plus winds."

Gabe Porter ended up tied for third with a score of 79 to lead the Chiefs along with Randy McNair's 81 that was good enough for a ninth-place tie on the par 72 course.

"Gabe and Randy always grind in matches and today Gabe tied for third place out of 40 golfers who played and Randy wasn't too far behind," Cox said.

Porter is ranked eighth in the CBBN POD standings to date.

Brenden Cox scored an 89 as did Tanner Montgomery.

"I feel like Tanner and Brenden are really starting to settle in and establish themselves as our number three and four golfers," J.R. Cox said.
