Huskies tennis sweeps Toppenish
OTHELLO - Both the boys and girls tennis teams of Othello High School moved to 2-0 in Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) play after respective 4-1 wins over Toppenish on Saturday.
On the girls' side, the team had to make some minor adjustments to its lineup.
"We were missing some players due to it being spring break so Katrina Montemayor stepped up from the three doubles spot to gain a win with Yanitta Cantu," Othello head coach Robert Pruneda said. "They both had to get use to each other but once they won the first set I was able to talk to them to capitalize on the net play and they listened and won the second set easily."
The two girls, playing at No. 2 doubles, won 7-5 6-2 and the No. 1 team of Emma Hymus and Jocelyn Cantu took care of business in cruising to a 6-4 6-2 victory.
"Emma and Jocelyn both had strong serves and were able to have a consistent net game to make an easy match," Pruneda said.
The Lady Huskies also swept singles play as No. 1 Ashleigh Almaguer won 7-6 (5), 7-1 and No. 2 Bethany Vargas dominated in a 6-1, 6-0 win.
In boys action, the Huskies also held the edge in singles play, as No. 1 Alec Montemayor won 7-6 (4), 6-0 and Othello's No. 2, Ben Taff won 6-0, 6-1.
The No. 1 doubles team of Marcus Garza and Wesley Cogswell held on for a tense 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win and the No. 3 team of Callen Anderson and Juan Gutierrez won 6-1, 6-1.
"Marcus and Wesley had the match of the day," Pruneda said. "They played stiff competition and won the first set on strong net play. They got relaxed a bit and did not move as a team and were able to make adjustments to win the match."
