Big 9 opener rough start for young Chiefs squad
The Moses Lake Chiefs softball team and Brianna Hoffman struggled this weekend in Richland as the Big 9 began
RICHLAND - A young Moses Lake Chiefs softball team were granted a rude awakening to 2011 Big 9 softball Friday afternoon.
The host Richland Bombers struck often and would cruise to a 20-4, 13-3 doubleheader sweep of the Chiefs (6-4, 0-2).
In the first game, Moses Lake committed seven errors and only rapped out five hits.
Richland knocked out 20 hits.
Moses Lake did start well, scoring three runs in the first inning on back-to-back singles by Cassandra Guerrero and Tessa Radach which led to Tasha Gentry's two RBI double.
Gentry would score later on a ground out.
Hallie Bishop went 2-for-2 to lead the offense while Haylie VanLaethem took the loss on the mound.
The Chiefs committed seven more errors in the nightcap and could muster only five hits.
Sadie Smigaj took the loss as starting pitcher.
"Our defense stayed In Moses Lake with 14 errors in 10 innings," Moses Lake head coach Dave Gregory said. "We can't win games against teams like Richland by playing like that. They hit ball hard and make you play. The kids know what we have to do to play better. We'll be ok."
Richland 17-19
EPHRATA 2-9
SELAH - Ephrata softball dropped to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) play with a 17-2, 19-9 doubleheader loss at Selah on Saturday.
Both games were finished via mercy-rule.
In the first game, Ephrata committed 12 errors and were led by Sami Krueger (2-for-2) and Skylar Lund (1-for-3).
The miscues continued in the second game as Ephrata were tagged with 11 errors to go with their 11 hits.
Krueger went 2-for-4, Lund ended up 3-fo-3 and Emma Ratigan finished the game going 3-for-4.
OTHELLO 16-14
Grandview 6-7
OTHELLO - With a resounding sweep of the Grandview Greyhounds on Saturday, Othello's Lady Huskies remain unbeaten in CWAC play.
Othello (6-2, 6-0) routed Grandview in both games of a doubleheader, 16-6 and 14-7.
Othello knocked out 15 hits in game one with Brenda Rodriguez earning the win from the mound.
She also went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, Joanna Quezada finished 2-for-4 as did Miranda Martinez, Kim Bullis 2-4, and Anica Garza 2-4, who recorded four RBI.
In game two, Othello broke out to an 11-3 lead and held on the rest of the way.
Daisy Salgado was the winning pitcher for Othello as she helped herself at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.
Miranda Martinez went 3-for-5, Rodriguez finished 2-fo-3 with three RBI, while Bullis and Lindsay and Anica Garza all went 2-for-4.
"It was a very windy and cold day a lot of mistakes were made on both teams," Othello head coach Rudy Ochoa said. "We hit the ball very well in both games."
